WEST RAND ACCOMMODATION |
|
| Krugersdorp
is a mining city in the West Rand of Gauteng, South Africa. Krugersdorp
was founded in 1887 by Marthinus Pretorius and named after Paul Kruger.
Apart from gold, manganese, iron, asbestos and lime are also mined in the
area. Krugersdorp is the site of the December 1880 gathering at which more
than 6,000 men vowed to fight for the Transvaal's independence. When gold
was discovered on the Witwatersrand, a need arose for a major town in the
west of the reef. The government bought part of the farm Paardekraal and
named the new town after the Transvaal President Paul Kruger. The British
built a concentration camp here during the Second Boer War to house Boer
women and children. In 1952 the West Rand Consolidated Mine was the
first in the world to extract Uranium as a byproduct of the gold refining
process. Krugersdorp no longer has a separate municipal government,
and the municipality has become part of the Mogale City municipality, along
with surrounding towns. |

| ROODEPOORT

|
| Roodepoort
is a city in Gauteng Province, South Africa. Johannesburg's most famous
botanical garden, Witwatersrand National Botanical Gardens (now renamed
Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens in honour of Walter Sisulu), is
located in Roodepoort. In 1884, brothers Fred and Harry Struben,
having discovered gold on the farm Wilgespruit at the western end of the
Witwatersrand, were granted concessions to mine the area. When George Harrison's
find at Langlaagte came to light and gold fever took hold, the Strubens
brothers were joined by a swarm of gold diggers. Though the Confidence
Reef bore little gold and their mine was unprofitable, the ramshackle town
that grew around it became the Roodepoort municipality in 1904. Incorporating
the towns of Hamberg, Florida and Maraisburg, Roodepoort became a city
in 1977. Residential Areas in the new developing parts of Roodepoort
are said to be expanding at a faster pace than anywhere else in South Africa.
This growth is said to be fueled by various factors such as the fast growing
Black middle class, the close proximity to other large Gauteng cities,
an already established and advanced infrastructure and much more.
Roodepoort no longer has a separate municipal government, and the municipality
is part of the City of Johannesburg. |
