At the foot of the Suikerbosrand, Heidelberg began in 1862 as a trading station built by a german, HJ Uekermann. A town was laid out around the store and named after Uekermann's alma mater.  During the First War of Independence Heidelberg served as capital of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek under the Triumvirate of Paul Kruger, PJ Joubert and MW Pretorius, from 1880 to 1883.  In 1885 the Witwatersrand gold reef was discovered in the Heidelberg district and the office of the Mining Commissioner was established there.  Heidelberg developed as a typical rural Victorian town. Many buildings dating back to the period between 1890 and 1910 have been preserved.

Vereeniging is a city in Gauteng province, South Africa, with a population of more than 350,000. It is also one of the constituent parts of the Vaal Triangle region and was formerly situated in the Transvaal province. The name Vereeniging is derived from the Afrikaans/Dutch word meaning "association" or "union".  Vereeniging is situated in the Southern part of Gauteng Province, and neighbors Vanderbijlpark (West), Three Rivers (East), Meyerton (North) and Sasolburg (South).  The predominant language in Vereeniging is Afrikaans, which is followed up closely by English and Sesotho.  The city was founded in 1892 and is situated on the banks of the northern loop of the Vaal River. Much of its early growth was due to the nearby coal mines.
