Addo Elephant National Park is an elephant park situated close to Port Elizabeth in South Africa and is recognized as one of the country's twenty national parks.  The original section of the park was founded in 1931 in order to provide a sanctuary for the eleven remaining elephants in the area. The park has proved to be very successful and currently houses more than 450 elephants, 400 Cape buffalo, over 48 endangered black rhino as well as a variety of antelope species. Lion and spotted hyena has also recently been re-introduced to the area. A species unique to the area is the flightless dung beetle, namely Circellium bacchus...  read more
About Addo Village: About an hour's drive from Port Elizabeth, Addo is a small farming town that's best known for its proximity to the Greater Addo Elephant National Park, which is South Africa's first 'Big Seven' reserve. As well as the usual Big Five - rhino, lion, elephant, leopard and buffalo, the park, which extends to the sea and some offshore islands, also offers sightings of southern right whales and (great) white sharks.  The park offers comfortable SANParks accommodation, as well as one luxury lodge within the reserve, but there are a number of excellent safari lodges, guest houses and B&B's on the fringes of the park. You can do a horse ride among the game in the park or ride an elephant close by. Addo is a citrus farming and horse breeding area with a very active local polo community.
