Kalk Bay
is a fishing village on the coast of False Bay, South Africa and is now
a suburb of greater Cape Town. It lies in a beautiful setting, wedged between
the ocean and sharply rising mountainous heights that are buttressed by
crags of grey sandstone. A literal translation from the Dutch/Afrikaans
name "Kalkbaai" is "Lime Bay". The Bible Institute of South Africa
is located here. The railway from the central business district of Cape
Town to Simon's Town passes through Kalk Bay and in some places the line
is only metres from the water's edge.
Many
famous caves (with names such as 'Ronan's Well', after the Walter Scott
novel St. Ronan's Well, and 'Free Drinks Saloon') are located in the mountains
above the village. They are of importance to spaeleologists because they
have formed in sandstone. Large cave systems are not often found in this
type of chemically unreactive rock. Kalk bay is also home to the famous
surf spot named "Kalk Bay Reef" it is known for its heavy barrels, and
shallow reef. it is best surfed on a big South East swell and north west
wind, in smaller swells low tide makes for better barrels.
Leave yourself time to wander
around the second-hand shops, see the craft stores and art galleries, and
the old china shops reminiscent of Aladdin's cave. Whilst there, take a
walk down to the colourful harbour, where fish can be bought straight from
the small fishing boats, and you may be lucky to see a seal alongside,
hoping for a titbit. Then stop to refresh yourself at a quaint cafe, or
lunch at one of the many good restaurants.

north of Cape Town on the West Coast. The Lagoon is a water sports enthusiast’s
paradise with wonderful kayaking, fun snorkelling and some of the best
windsurfing and kitesurfing in the world. In summer, migratory water
birds arrive in their thousands from as far away as Russia. Schaapen Island,
in the middle of the lagoon, is bird sanctuary so it’s strictly off limits,
but you can paddle really close to it and watch the gannets, gulls and
cormorants squabbling amongst themselves. The West Coast National Park
borders on the town and sweeps down to the southern end of the lagoon.
It’s a good place for spotting small game but the major attraction is the
colourful spring flowers.

The town it's self is home
to some very original South African gems, Die Strandloper, Froggies, Pearly's
on The Beach and of course 'Eve's Footprint!' Eve's Footprint was discovered
on the entrance to the Lagoon and is one of the earliest proof of modern
man's or woman's existence on this planet! Over 170,000 years old, this
fossil shows how people have been coming to this town for a lot longer
than we thought! Even a pair of bindings were found close by, so perhaps
she was a wakeboarder!
