Home  -  Western Cape Guesthouses  - Kalk Bay - Cape Point Route - False Bay

Kalk Bay is a fishing village on the coast of False Bay, South Africa and is now a suburb of greater Cape Town. It lies in a beautiful setting, wedged between the ocean and sharply rising mountainous heights that are buttressed by crags of grey sandstone. A literal translation from the Dutch/Afrikaans name "Kalkbaai" is "Lime Bay".  The Bible Institute of South Africa is located here. The railway from the central business district of Cape Town to Simon's Town passes through Kalk Bay and in some places the line is only metres from the water's edge.

Many famous caves (with names such as 'Ronan's Well', after the Walter Scott novel St. Ronan's Well, and 'Free Drinks Saloon') are located in the mountains above the village. They are of importance to spaeleologists because they have formed in sandstone. Large cave systems are not often found in this type of chemically unreactive rock. Kalk bay is also home to the famous surf spot named "Kalk Bay Reef" it is known for its heavy barrels, and shallow reef. it is best surfed on a big South East swell and north west wind, in smaller swells low tide makes for better barrels.

Leave yourself time to wander around the second-hand shops, see the craft stores and art galleries, and the old china shops reminiscent of Aladdin's cave. Whilst there, take a walk down to the colourful harbour, where fish can be bought straight from the small fishing boats, and you may be lucky to see a seal alongside, hoping for a titbit. Then stop to refresh yourself at a quaint cafe, or lunch at one of the many good restaurants.

Almost all of our rooms offer unrivalled views over the sea and Kalk Bay harbour. Home  -  Western Cape Guesthouses  - Simon's Town - Cape Point Route - False Bay
Simon's Town is a village and a naval base in South Africa, near Cape Town. It is located on the shores of False Bay, on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula. For more than two centuries it has been an important naval base and harbour (first for the Royal Navy and now the South African Navy). False Bay is located to the southeast of Cape Town but to the west of Cape Agulhas and Simon's Town is consequently located roughly on the border between the Atlantic and the Indian oceans. The town is named after Simon van der Stel, an early governor of the Cape Colony.

The land rises steeply from near the water's edge and the picturesque village is boxed in along the shoreline by the heights above. The small harbour itself is not a particularly good natural harbour and is protected from swells by a breakwater that was built with thousands of huge blocks of sandstone quarried out of the face of the mountain above. Simon's Town is now in effect a suburb of greater Cape Town. It is the terminus of a railway line that runs south from the central business district of Cape Town.

In places the railway line hugs the steep eastern shore of False Bay quite spectacularly and in bad weather foam from some heavy swells will fly up and wet the trains!  One of the best beaches on the Cape Peninsula, Boulders Beach, is located a few kilometres to the south of Simon's Town.

Penguins at the Boulders, Cape Town, South Africa
View Google Map of South Africa
View map of Simon's Town
Here small, secluded coves with white sandy beaches and calm, safe, warm, shallow waters are interspersed between huge rounded boulders of Cape granite that form low cliffs and small caves. There has been a colony of African penguins at Boulders Beach since 1985. There is no record of the birds having lived here prior to that date, so their decision to settle in an area already well-utilized by humans is remarkable. There are only three penguin populations on the mainland in southern Africa. (The others are on islands).
15 on Penguin, Guest House, SIMON'S TOWN
15 on Penguin Guesthouse is a newly three star graded, bed and breakfast style guesthouse. It is set along the lush, green Glen Marine mountainside and overlooks the beautiful Simon's Town bay and False Bay. Wake up to the sounds of birds singing and waves crashing, and to the smell of the fresh sea breeze that one can only enjoy from being so close to the beach. In the evenings unwind in your Jacuzzi with a glass of sparkling champagne. We have four en-suite rooms, all beautifully decorated to suit this stunning guesthouse with a view. We can also accommodate wedding functions between 80 to 200 guests.
Cheriton Guest House, SIMON'S TOWN
Our Guest House is set against the mountain in the quiet suburb of Seaforth. Porcupine are frequent nocturnal visitors and guinea fowl roost in the surrounding trees. The penguin colony, beaches and the town are within easy walking distance. Witness unforgettable sunrises from our deck or simply enjoy the continuous activity in the bay. Yachts, Naval vessels, Cruise ships, Kayaks, Whales & Dolphins will all compete for your attention. Breakfast is served in the dining room or on the deck with stunning mountain and sea views. Choice of continental, health, or English is offered with fruit juices, yoghurt and cereal. We will endeavour to accommodate special requests.
Mariner Guesthouse, Guesthouse with a View, SIMON'S TOWN
Mariner Guesthouse is built against the slopes of the fynbos covered mountain in Simon’s Town. This historical harbour town is 45km from Cape Town and its International Airport, and situated in the greater Table Mountain National Park.  With breathtaking views across False Bay and within walking distance of the centre of town and beaches, Mariner Guesthouse offers stylish elegance, comfort and friendly hospitality.  Sit back and relax on your private balcony whilst enjoying the colourful display of the sunset and watching the whales play in the bay.  Later, experience true South African culture around the fire when we have our weekly “braai” (South African traditional “barbeque”) while your hosts share stories of life in South Africa. A truly memorable and enriching evening!
Whale View Manor Guesthouse & Spa, SIMON'S TOWN
Overlooking a secluded beach, our guesthouse lies on the outskirts of historic Simon’s Town, between Cape Town and Cape Point, on the False Bay Coastline. Take a warm hospitality of our eclectic reception areas and enjoy our gorgeous breakfasts in the quiet serenity of our dining room which has an outstanding vantage point to watch the calving whales and the penguin colonies. Gourmet three course dinners are available on request.  At Whale View Manor we offer you a dream within a dream, where the influences and nuances of our world culminate under the African skies. As our lives become more turbulent there is a natural desire to dive into a world of fantasy where we can escape, if just for a while. Let the magic of uninterrupted sea views infuse and invigorate, while the sightings of a whale, dolphin, penguin, or seal, stimulate.
