on the shores of False Bay, close to Cape Town, Simon's Town is
a village and a naval base on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula. Simon's
Town is considered to be a suburb of Greater Cape Town.
False Bay is located to the
southeast of Cape Town but to the west of Cape Agulhas and Simon's Town
is consequently located roughly on the border between the Atlantic and
the Indian oceans. The town is named after Simon van der Stel, an early
governor of the Cape Colony. |

 Boulders
Beach, one of the best beaches on the Cape Peninsula, is located a
few kilometres to the south of Simon's Town. Here small, secluded coves
with white sandy beaches and calm, safe, warm, shallow waters are interspersed
between huge rounded boulders of Cape granite that form low cliffs and
small caves.
There has been a colony of
African penguins at Boulders Beach since 1985. There is no record
of the birds having lived here prior to that date, so their decision to
settle in an area already well-utilized by humans is remarkable. There
are only three penguin populations on the mainland in southern Africa,
as all others are on islands. |

Town Guide
 Simon's
Town is an attractive little coastal village on the False Bay side of the
Cape Peninsula. Part of the town’s enduring charm is the naval atmosphere,
Victoria-style architecture, cobbled streets, pretty beaches and the resident
colony of African penguins.
Swim or picnic amongst the
penguins at Boulders Beach, one of Cape Town's best beaches for children.
Those looking for more action can snorkel at Seaforth Beach or go on a
guided sea kayaking trip from the Simon's Town waterfront to Boulders Beach.
 The
lively waterfront is the fun part of this village and offers a good selection
of quayside restaurants, a curio craft market at the quaint Jubilee Square
and an active yacht club.
Take to the ocean in the
local water taxi or go on an adventurous boat trip to watch whales, seals
and white sharks. You could even do something really unique and take an
open-ocean pelagic birding trip with Cape Town Pelagics to spot albatrosses
and other soaring beauties.
Those wishing to keep their
feet on the ground can go on a walkabout and discover Simon's Town's fascinating
