Swellendam and surrounds

Marloth Nature Reserve
Just minutes from Swellendam, the wonderfully peaceful Marloth Nature Reserve boasts magical walks to waterfalls, indigenous forest and even allows you to go to the top of the majestic Langeberg Mountains which tower over Swellendam or enjoy a horse ride through the beautiful forestry trails led by an experienced guide.

Bontebok National Park
This 8000 hectare national park is home to the threatened Cape Mountain Zebra and Bontebok. It boasts 196 different birds and 490 different plant species. The plants and flowers are at their best in April. Enjoy a walk in the park or a picnic on the banks of the Breede River.

De Hoop Nature reserve
Whale watching, and cross the Breede River with the last hand operated ferry in Africa (Malgas).
The coast just a short drive from Swellendam is one of - if not the - world's most famous whale watching areas. From De Hoop to Witsand you can watch the once almost extinct Southern right whales breaching and splashing just a pebble's throw from the shore. The months of September, October and November are the best whale watching months, but you are almost guaranteed of seeing whales throughout the winter.

Nature lovers will adore the De Hoop Nature Reserve with its impressive diversity of rare wildlife and numerous species of flora and fauna only found in South Africa.

Agulhas Lighthouse, South Africa
Cape Agulhas
Southern most point in Africa and meeting place of two mighty Atlantic and Indian oceans. Visit the shipwreck museum and the second oldest working lighthouse in South Africa.

Robertson Wine Valley
Wine Route – a world class wine route with some big wine businesses and small family-run wine estates, everything still pretty uncommercialised  and amongst its members this region boasts with some of South Africa’s top wine brands. Come and experience what this valley has to offer – some of our country’s best wines.

Tradouw Pass
Worth driving through the Langeberg Mountains into the Little Karoo, over the scenic Tradauw Pass. Drive through Zuurbraak, a traditional settlement established as a mission station in 1812 by the London Mission Society. The buildings of the village tell the story of its history. The first church, the parsonage and school, together with the old houses and buildings around the village square have been restored and are in use, as well as the Anglican church building. All are situated on the main road through the town.

Montagu
Montagu is not only well-known for its Hot Springs, but is also world-renowned amongst rock-climbers and is cited to be one of the best locations in the world for this challenging sport.

Why not try the Montagu Tractor ride that takes you to the summit of the Langeberg Mountains into some of Montagu's most spectacular mountains. An experience not to be missed

Fishing
Cast a line into the nearby Breede River, and hook a kabeljou, grunter and many others..

Golf
Enjoy a round on the beautiful Swellendam Golf Course. As one guest recently commented, "the golf was spoilt a bit by the magnificent views".
