The Royal Hotel - Luxury Hotel in Durban, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

The Royal Hotel's principle of uncompromising service and unfailing hospitality has always been a cornerstone in it's 150 years of existence.

During these years it has been this ethos that has carried it from strength to strength through a colourful and, at times, tumultous evolution.

At The Royal we believe that the real ingredient of lasting hotel excellence cannot be bought. This is because it is service that makes the difference and high standards first have to be cultivated and then continuously refined. It is this commitment that has made us one of the foremost hotels in the world.

While pleasure is The Royal's business, business itself receives expert attention too. Conferencing and banqueting facilities here are comprehensive, offering a choice of venues from glittering ballroom to intimate boardroom.  Magnificent yellowwood paneling, complimented by exquisite crystal chandeliers, predominates throughout the banqueting suites, which offer the perfect setting for full-scale conventions, sales presentations, directors' meetings and any other business-oriented function. All can be linked to the latest in audio-visual technology and, as you'd expect, the catering and communications services are every bit as legendary as the Hotel.

For your convenience, The Royal Hotel has also introduced a Business Centre. Equipped with the latest in telecommunications and computer technology, it is the ideal venue for the serious businessman. With a choice of two boardrooms and three fully outfitted offices, it's like you never left your office at all.

Hospitality at The Royal goes back a long way, to the early 1840s when a sea captain supplying the British garrison sensed the port of Durban's commercial promise and bought the land upon which The Royal stands today.  Opened as Durban's first hostelry in 1845, the building was originally a low-thatched wattle-and-daub building called the Commercial Hotel, a name that changed to The Masonic in 1852.

In the years that followed the hotel became the centre of the town's rapidly growing community life and, following a Royal Appointment granted by Queen Victoria's second son, Prince Alfred, the hotel became known as The Royal in 1860.  Much of the historical significance of The Royal relates to the guests who have visited the hotel. Eminent guests throughout the years include, Cecil John Rhodes, H.G. Wells, Rider Haggard, Marlene Dietrich, Mark Twain, Prince Alfred, Queen Elizabeth II, Margaret Thatcher, F.W. de Klerk, Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Nelson Mandela.
