South Africa and the
languages
South Africa is a country
inhabited by people from diverse backgrounds. From the tourism point of
view South Africa is a fabulous country dotted with many World Heritage
Sites like greater Saint Lucia Wetland Park, Robben Island, Drakensberg
Park, Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, Vredefort Dome, and Cape Floral Region
Protected Areas. People here belong to different nationalities and races
and there are about 2 million Asians living in this country. Most of these
Asians are from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives, and Sri Lanka.
There are three capitals
in South Africa- Cape Town, Pretoria and Bloemfontein. This has been done
to handle the country’s legislative, administrative and judicial functions
independently. On the other hand Johannesburg happens to be the country’s
most important economic, industrial and cultural hub. Amongst the third
world countries Johannesburg is considered as one of the most industrialized
cities with a population of 2.6 million. South Africa produces almost half
of the world’s gold.
For wildlife enthusiasts
South Africa with its numerous national parks and reserves offers some
of the most amazing wildlife experiences. One of the most popular and beautiful
national park in South Africa is the Kruger National Park. It is an ideal
habitat for animals like elephants, giraffes, rhinoceroses,
monkeys, zebras, cheetahs, hyenas, hippopotamus, gazelles, elands, lions,
African wild dogs etc.
In South Africa, French
and German are being used more along with English and other local dialects.
Almost half of the people in the African continent speak French and lately
trade amongst the French-speaking African countries is on the upswing.
As the country is developing
its international links in various fields like commerce, medicine, engineering,
education and tourism, the demand for French speaking people in these fields
is increasing day by day. Though there are people who prefer to learn
French abroad or to learn
French in Switzerland to get a better grasp over the language yet
with the establishment of world-class French teaching centres in South
Africa with active support from the French government learning French has
become easier.
The same is the case with
German, which is the most widely spoken first language in Europe and other
continents including Africa. In fact it is the second-most commonly used
scientific language. Almost 18% of books published throughout the world
are written in German. Even on the Internet German is the most commonly
used language after English and has common roots with English. Common English
words like finger, arm, hand etc are actually German.
South Africa has important
trade links with Germany and there are more than 500 German companies who
have their base in South Africa. These companies from time to time sponsor
German
language courses for their employees. This has led to the setting
up of German language schools In South Africa. These schools offer the
same quality standards in teaching as available elsewhere. Moreover South
Africa also has well-established German communities. Though one can learn
German abroad yet with all these facilities existing here learning
German in South Africa has become more convenient.
Learning different languages
can be useful for higher studies and career development and languages like
French and German can be useful not only in the African continent but also
throughout the world. Choosing to learn these languages will give the learner
many options later on. It increases employability in the global market
and also opens the doors to various promising possibilities.
