Considered

Game Reserve represents a conservation mission to expand South Africa's
green frontier by re-establishing the ancient wildlife migration routes
that linked the famous Kruger Park in the east to the lush Drakensberg
Mountains in the west. In the process lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant,
and rhino have all been reintroduced to the wild, making Makalali HOME
TO OVER ONE THOUSAND WILD ANIMALS including four of Africa's "Big Five".
Conferencing
- Makalali is fully equipped as a conference venue, and conference
facilities include a group entertainment, conference and dining area. A
luxurious 60 seat thatch-covered main building is accompanied by an open
kitchen and entertainment area surrounding flame torches that create a
MYSTICAL AND FIERY AFRICAN AMBIENCE. |

Makalali,
meaning "Place of Rest" in Shangaan, has four separate 12 bed camps, situated
on the banks of the Makhutswi River.
LUXURY
accommodation is offered and each air-conditioned suite has a King Size
bed, an en-suite bathroom, an outside shower, a private deck, a fireplace
and a raised timber "sala" which doubles as a lounge or dayroom, or as
a viewing platform. The rooms are decorated in AFRICAN DESIGN STYLES with
sculptured ceramic taps and basins.
All
rooms are fitted with mosquito nets, and guests are supplied with insect
repellent, but please note that Makalali is a MALARIA AREA and malaria
tablets are recommended ALL YEAR ROUND. |

PANORAMIC
ESCARPMENT TOURS
Your
journey start with a rapid climb onto and through the rugged yet picturesque
plateau of the Drakensburg mountains and then descending down into the
Lowveld plains. Pleaces of interest along your way, include the Blyde River
canyon (gigantic gorge more than 20 km long, cut out of the escarpment)
and Bourke's Luck Potholes (deep cylindrical cavities formed by swirling
action of flood waters). Pilgrims Rest (exact replica of a 19th Century
mining town and Graskop (a forestry village perked on a spur of the escarpment).
Rates include a lunch at Pilgrims Rest and all entrance fees. |
| RIVER
RAFTING ON THE OLIFANTS RIVER
Due
to Makalali's prime location it is possible to go river rafting and abseiling
sometime during your visit to our unique facility. For this above-mentioned
purpose a professional River Rafting company utilizes the last 12-km of
the Olifants Gorge. Two-man Croc rafts will aid you in conquering the many
rapids, varying from grade 2-4, with various cascades, chutes and quiet
pools in between, providing a lot of variety.
GOLF
PACKAGES AT THE HANS MERENSKY GOLF COURSE
Imagine
strolling around in the world famous Kruger National Park and having regular
wildlife and bird sightings whilst slaving away on the golf course. This
all is possible as an added adventure during your Makalali experience.
VISIT
TO THE NEARBY CULTURAL VILLAGE
Makalali
invites you to come and experience the very intriguing local Shangaan culture
at a tribal museum. Day to day tasks and activities are performed, just
as their native ancestors did.
TOURS
TO THE CHEETAH BREEDING PROJECT FACILITY
Combined
with the above day trip is a visit to a facility which specializes in the
captive breeding of cheetahs. It is important thought to note that because
of the nature of the project most of your sightings will be through enclosure
fences.

Educational
Walks (giving you insight into some of the local superstitions and uses
of a wide variety of plants), birding walks (because we are a lot more
quiet when we walk, calls can easily be heard and identified, especially
in and around the lovely Makutswi river), or for fitness enthusiast, more
strenuous walks, are all available daily for no extra charge.
SCENIC
FLIGHTS OVER THE HOEDSPRUIT MOUNTAINS
Guests
are invited to experience the breathtaking scenery and splendor of Makalali
and the Lowveld area by air. A small fixed wing plane provides and aerial
view of some of Makalali's surroundings, the Drakensburg Escarpment, and
the world famous Kruger National Park. Flying time is one to one and a
half hours. |
