This
picturesque town is the third oldest town in South Africa and is dominated
by the second largest granite outcrop in the world. It was these granite
boulders glistening in the sun after rain that inspired Abraham Gabbema,
in 1657, to name the mountain "the Diamond and Pearl Mountain" from which
the name Paarl was later derived.
